Wesleyan Communications Department Showcases Opportunities for Students

Wesleyan Mass Communication graduate, Heather Birge has been calling basketball games in the Sid Rich since Fall 2015.

Birge, who originally came to Wesleyan to play tennis, got her start calling games on a whim.

“My roommate started working the volleyball and basketball games as a scorekeeper,” Birge said. “She asked me if I wanted to announce the games because [Sports Information Director] Ryan [Keating] needed help at the games.”

Along with helping announce the games, Birge has shot video, as well as done scorekeeping, Birge insists that Mass Communication majors must be proactive if they wish to pursue a future in covering sports.

“The cool thing about Texas Wesleyan, is that there is a lot of opportunity if you search for it,” Birge said. “if it’s something you’re interested in, Ryan Keating is always willing to help people out, he had some interns from the mass comm department last year and helped show them another side to sports marketing.”

Birge insists that those who are interested should contact Ryan Keating to help.

“If you have attended a game, it’s pretty obvious that we don’t have much to work with,” Birge said. “A lot of that has to do with the lack of people helping, more bodies equal more things that we can do.

There’s plenty of people that are willing to help around here if you are interested in doing something specific, it’s what we do here at Wesleyan.”
