Rams Wrestling Gearing up for Fall Debut

Wesleyan’s new wrestling program has hit the ground running.

Wrestling Head Coach Ray Bedford has made the move to campus and is hard at work recruiting and planning the wrestling team’s debut this fall, according to Athletic Director Ricky Dotson.

However, the wrestling program’s arrival is not without its own set of challenges, the biggest being where the matches will take place, according to Dotson.

“The Fall 2019 season, along with practices will take place at the Boys and Girls club of Greater Tarrant County,” Dotson said.

Despite the program’s challenges regarding a venue, Coach Bedford has been hard at work filling roster spots, according to Dotson.

The new program’s arrival to campus has been mostly positive, however, Junior Political Science Major David Cason has questions regarding how Wesleyan will be able to financially support another athletic program.

“I don’t think that Wesleyan can support another sport.” Cason said. “I think that they don’t already take care of the sports they have on campus already, specifically the table tennis program.

The table tennis program is the most successful on campus, and they still need outside funding, so why are we adding another program if we can’t fund the ones that are already established? Where is the money coming from?”

Senior Mass Communication Major, Elena Maldonado sees the new program as another avenue for future rams to excel.

“I think Texas Wesleyan having a wrestling team will provide student athletes a great opportunity to expand their horizons, Maldonado said. “I look forward to seeing the teams play in the near future.”
